With the recent buzz surrounding Universal/Focus Features’ purchase of the rights to the Fifty Shades of Grey movie, fans are starting to wonder who will play the infamous Christian Grey and timid Anastasia Steele. The movie, which is to be based on E. L. James’s popular trilogy, is in the very early stages of production; that is to say that a writer hasn’t even been hired yet. However, with a Twilight-esque excitement surrounding the film, fans of the franchise are already picking out favorites for the coveted roles and staking their claims on the upcoming movie. Here is a list of some of the most popular actors and actresses mentioned as possibilities for the roles of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, and speculations relating to them playing the parts.

  1. Matt Bomer has been one of the most popular picks for the male lead in Fifty Shades of Grey. With a debonair look and killer smile, it’s no wonder fans want him to be their Christian. The 34-year-old actor, who’s become famous in the hit show White Collar, has already caused some controversy surrounding the part, though. Bestselling author Bret Easton Ellis recently slammed the openly gay actor, claiming that his sexuality wouldn’t be good for the role. However, many disagree seeing as Bomer plays a straight lady killer on White Collar, and looks mighty fine doing it.
  2. Ian Somerhalder is yet another big name being mentioned in the Fifty Shades of Grey buzz. The Vampire Diaries and Lost actor definitely has the look and experience to play Christian Grey, with additional kudos for the possessive attitude he often portrays as his character Damon in The Vampire Diaries. The actor has also shown explicit interest in the film, saying that playing the role would be “amazing.”
  3. One of the most controversial and talked-about actors favorited for the role of Christian Grey is, unsurprisingly, Robert Pattinson. The young star, also known as Edward Cullen to twihards, is said to be perfect for the part. After all, Christian Grey is loosely based on Edward Cullen. However, Fifty Shades of Grey author E. L. James has made it clear that she doesn’t want Pattinson to play the part, expressing that it would be too strange for him to be both Edward and Christian.
  4. When it comes to the part of Anastasia Steele, many are pointing to Lucy Hale as the best candidate. The Pretty Little Liars star is seemingly perfect for the role, looking the part and having already portrayed a popular literary figure. Hale has also shown interest in the role, though many see her playing Christian Grey’s younger sister, Mia, instead. Hale admits that it would be a hard part to fill, but many believe she would make the perfect Ana Steele.
  5. Nina Dobrev, famous for portraying Elena in The Vampire Diaries, has also been mentioned quite a bit in buzz surrounding the film. She may not exactly look the part, but she definitely has the whole tortured and in love thing down. With real-life boyfriend Ian Somerhalder also being talked about for the movie, many are excited at the thought of the couple claiming the lead roles.
  6. Alexis Bledel is another big fan contender for the role of Anastasia Steele. With intense blue eyes and dark brown hair, many have pegged her as the naturally perfect Ana. Not only has she played the coy and clumsy in her many past roles, but she also has the whole young and innocently beautiful thing down too. Bledel could definitely play Ana well, and is a huge favorite among fans.

Though the list of possibilities is long, these names along with a few others have stood out the most in casting rumors. The listed actors and actresses have run rampant in fans’ imaginations pertaining to the film, with fantasy pairs being made and YouTube videos being created. It’s only a matter of time before the real casting begins and fans can finally be appeased with the news of their real-life Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.

  1. I’ve seen so many different actors being considered for the part and there are tons of them that I think would be amazing but I can really see Ian Somerhalder as Christian. But I don’t think I’m in love with any of the women they’re considering for Anastasia, especially Nina Dobrev. I hope they just choose a fresh face. They were considering Selena Gomez (she said she wasn’t interested) which makes me afraid that they’re going to cast someone to play Anastasia just because they’re well known to teenagers but is way too innocent for the part. It’s kind of how I believe Robert Pattinson was perfect for Edward but Kristen Stewart was terrible for Bella. I hope they don’t cast the perfect Christian and a horrible Anastasia… I feel inspired to go write an article about who I think should get the roles lol.

    • Elise Brunsvold says:

I agree that they need a fresh face for Ana… I can’t really imagine any of these gals playing her. On the other hand, I desperately want Matt Bomer to play Christian. Thanks for the comment, though, and I loved your article!

    • I am really shocked that Ian Somerhalder is even being considered. He is no way good-looking enough to be Christian Grey. I mean, come on! Christian Grey is so beautiful he stops strangers in their tracks and Ian defintitely does not! I don’t find him good looking at all. He is actually weird looking to me. On the other hand, Matt Bomer is physical perfection! He is it!

  2. Laura ziemann says:

None of the females mentioned in this article would suffice as Anna Steele; on the other hand Ian Somerhalder would be perfect for the part of Christian Grey! I do think that Leighton Meester would be a perfect fit

  3. Anastasia Steele = Alexis Bledel
    Christian Grey = Ian Somerhalder
(Matt Bomer would also be nice to interpret Mr. Grey)

  4. My brother suggested I may like this website. He was once entirely right.
This post actually made my day. You cann’t believe simply how much time I had spent for this information! Thank you!

  5. Independent movie providers are showing that the large companies no longer will be the only real judges of the things the population prefer. As soon as you add to that distribution on the Internet and, press, web pages, from chat to whole films. It’s a completely new world. Much of it wonderful, some not.
