The Geek Love Connection: New Dating Site Allows for Fandoms Collide to Find Love

A big trend in my corner of the internet is FandomDating.com, an online dating site for those involved in “fandoms” – communities for a select show, movie, comic, or game – to find a companion for conventions (i.e. Comic-Con, LeakyCon, Dragon*Con, etc.), or just to find love with someone with a common interest. The fandoms represented on the site are diverse, ranging from Jane Austen fanatics to Bronies, Pokemon to Homestuck, Avengers to Starkid, and Glee to Assassin’s Creed. Rather than the typical questions asked on a dating site, FandomDating asks users things like “What is your favorite mythical land and why?” and “If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?”.

I personally do not use the site, but the idea is ingenious. Having a specific interest can be hard to explain to someone who doesn’t have a specific interest themselves. As someone who passionately loves the Harry Potter series and is getting into Marvel comics, it would be incredibly discouraging to hear my significant other put down the things that bring me joy because they don’t understand. I count myself as someone who is incredibly lucky to have someone that understands that passion. (Sometimes.) FandomDating allows individuals who would usually hold back in “polite company” to be themselves with other like minded people.

In addition to that, FandomDating is inclusive to those who are agender/trans*, and inclusive to those who do not identify as hetero or homosexual. This is becoming more and more common in dating sites, and it’s refreshing to see that FandomDating has that included as well. Again, the biggest part about being in a fandom is about being yourself and taking part in something that makes you feel like you belong.

The site is currently in beta testing, and when the beta testing period ends, it will become a paid use site. The money raised will be donated to anti-bullying organizations. In order to use the site, you must be 18 years or older.
