This October, people all over the globe are preparing for National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo.
National Novel Writing Month is an event where participants write 50,000 word manuscripts in the month of November. Traditionally, people write fiction novels during the month, but rebels are welcomed with open arms. So really, anything’s allowed. However, since the focus is on quantity, rather than quality, the writing produced usually requires a lot of revising before it’s ready for the public eye.
The forums on NaNoWriMo’s website buzz with activity during November. People have Word Wars, time competitions to see who can get out the most words in a set amount of time (usually 5 minutes). Adoption agencies are run, with people dropping off story ideas and characters they created but can’t use.
Some of these novels have even been published. Here’s a list.
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (also made into a movie. Robert Pattinson was an actor for it, just a heads up to the Twilight fandom) Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Who knows? Maybe one of the novels from this NaNoWriMo will end up in a bookstore near you.
